Warning lights on? Loss of vehicle power? You may have DPF issues.
The exhaust emissions standards for new cars have required a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) in the exhaust of most diesel cars since 2004. The majority of cars produced after 2009 will have one fitted. If your vehicle was manufactured after 2005 please call or check online to see if a DPF has been fitted to your vehicle.
In lay man’s terms DPF’s catch bits of soot or particulate in the DPF unit fitted to the exhaust system, being a filter they have to be maintained and kept at an acceptable saturation level to maintain performance. This is called ‘regeneration’ – where the collected soot is burnt off at high temperature to leave the lowest achievable ash residue.
Automatic vehicle DPF regeneration if possible is carried out by over injection of fuel to generate higher exhaust temperatures and in-turn burn off particulate build up. This can take pace in two ways, on motorway-type runs, when exhaust temperature is high enough to burn off the soot or through forced DPF regeneration causing the engine management computer (ECU) to make small adjustments to increase the exhaust temperature and initiate regeneration when build up gets to 45%.
If you are experiencing build up in your filter, it may be possible to initiate a regeneration and clear the warning light by driving at the recommended speed and rpm and duration or to attempt forced regeneration.
If both options fail to regenerate your vehicle, soot will continue to build up. When your vehicle reaches around 75% build up of soot, you can expect to see other warning lights come on and lack of vehicle power and limp mode.
At this point you have two options, take the car to a dealer for a replacement filter, with prices ranging from £1000 – £3000, or you can visit us for a DPF delete, where our prices start at only £400.
